The top 10 questions...
1. Where can we see Kiwi???
Hmmm, no guarantees, but Masons Bay would be your best bet. Or going out on an evening Kiwi Spotting trip (Bravo Adventures)
2. What’s the weather going to be like?
As Billy Connelly said “there is no such thing as bad weather - only the wrong clothes”. Stewart Island’s weather is awesomely changeable - awesome in that, if it’s crap weather, it’s bound to change again soon...
3. Do we need sleeping bags?
No, all the beds are made up. Just bring towels.
4. How far from the ferry and plane is Bunkers?
It’s an easy five minute walk from the wharf and about the same from the post office (where the free shuttle from the airstrip comes to.) At both places you can get a free A4 tear off map, we are marked on that.
5. How long do you need on Stewart Island?
Well... you’re asking the wrong person - I’d say years. But if that’s not possible due to other commitments, definitely try and spend 5 days here. So maybe you can have a few days hiking, a day or two doing local activities (kayaking, Ulva Island or fishing trip etc) and a weather day up your sleeve.
6. Can we book one night, then just decide to stay longer once we arrive?
Not really, as during summer we do get booked out, so we’d strongly recommend booking a few nights, if your plans change, just let us know as soon as possible, no worries.
7. What should we do while we’re there?
This is a hard one, as everyone loves Stewart Island for different reasons. Personally, I think the sea is what makes Stewart Island awesome - so kayaking, fishing, exploring the rock pools, pelagic bird trips, beaches and snorkeling would be top of my list. The hiking is what brings a lot of people to Stewart Island tho, with the Rakiura Track being a ‘Great Walk’. Mason Bay on the west coast of the island has the most amazing beach, over 10km long and constantly battered by winds and swells, it’s a very impressive sight to behold. The next land from here is the southern tip of South America. To find out more about the tracks go to www.doc.govt.nz
8. We love staying at Bunkers... but want to go away hiking for a couple of days, can we store our luggage at Bunkers?
Yes, no trouble at all. We have a luggage store room for you to use free of charge.
As for questions 9 & 10... I’m still trying to think of them...
If can think of something else, email me. We’ll even credit you with the question.
From Vicki. Do you cater for families?
We welcome families to stay but it is still a very much traveller’s Backpackers. We have a 4 bed dorm that you can book to yourselves. As with all groups, we expect families to respect the space and belongs of the other guests.
